Energy Conservation Capacity Building

India’s Energy consumption is soaring rapidly and is expected to quadruple by 2030. Global warming is for real and reflects in the fact that the arctic cover has dwindled by over 18% in less than 2 decades. In this context, inefficient usage or wastage of Energy directly contributes to global warming as it necessitates greater power generation and hence greater usage of fossil fuels. Further, economies incur huge expenditure to support their energy needs. It is estimated that India alone will require over 600,000 MW of installed capacity by 2030. It is possible to reduce such requirement by atleast 8-10% provided we work as a nation to bring about a consolidated effort for energy conservation. Such initiatives leading to reducing overall energy consumption at any level have dual benefits of direct cost savings as well as environment conservation.

We at the Energy Centre contribute to this cause in several ways. Through the Energy Centre at RGREP, we conceptualize and implement several capacity building programmes aimed at promoting energy conservation and action against global warming. Our programmes can be broadly categorized into the following categories:

  1. Training Programmes for industry, public servants and corporates
  2. Awareness Camps for educational institutions such as schools and colleges
  3. Theme based recreational programmes and events on RGREP Campus
  4. Workshops, exhibitions and seminars to promote energy efficient products and related services
  5. Work with industry to design and implement Corporate Social Responsibility Initiatives in the energy management space

Energy Management for Industry

Today, Indian industries are witnessing increasing energy costs and an inherent pressure from global clientele for demonstrating climate responsibility. Energy Management is a very effective solution for industries (small scale to large ones) to address both these challenges. Energy Management typically encompasses the following activities:

  1. Executing an investment grade energy audit. The deliverable of this activity is a Detailed Energy Audit Report reflecting the following:
    1. Current scenario in terms of energy consumption across the industrial establishment including installed equipment and appliances
    2. The report will detail the areas of inefficiencies and energy losses in the entire system
    3. List recommendations and corrective actions for achieving energy efficiency
    4. Quantify potential energy savings (in terms of units/annum) that will ensue on implementation of recommendations
    5. Present a cost-benefit analysis to demonstrate the attractiveness of investing into energy efficiency and options for financing implementation (Energy Savings Company, Carbon Financing or self-financing etc)
  1. Implementing recommendations and measures as outlined in the Detailed Energy Audit Report. The outcome of this activity is to gain from reduced energy consumption as a result of implementation. This phase typically includes the following:
    1. Work with the client to help choose an appropriate financing mechanism for funding implementation
    2. Wherever required, manage bidding and finalization of ESCO for project implementation either on a shared savings or guaranteed savings arrangement
    3. Project Management, monitoring and reporting

Policy Deliberations & Consulting for Government

National and State Governments have a significant role to play in achieving the desired goals of Energy Conservation. The Energy Conservation Act, 2001 is a step in the right direction. The Government of India has set up Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) under this act and has also mandated several measures to be taken up by State Governments. RGREP is one such initiative of the State Government of Haryana that aims to not only implement State Government’s initiatives but will also help evolve the policy, guidelines and efforts in the right spirit. As part of this, we at the Energy Centre involve in several activities such as:

- Consulting for Government and Nodal Agencies to help design initiatives, directives and guidelines aimed at energy conservation
- Organize round table discussions involving various stakeholders to gather inputs, opinions and recommendations
- Plan, implement and report on pilot projects in the area of energy conservation
